85% of Fortune 1000 companies used some form of team- or group-based pay in 2005, according to the University of Southern California's Center for Effective Organizations. Recent research at Penn State suggests that this trend may be counterproductive for certain teams. When team members don't share a high level of trust -- a situation that occurs frequently in short-term, virtual, and cross-cultural teams -- they strongly prefer being paid individually. When employees' pay is tied to the performance of team members they don't trust, they find it unfair -- and that sense of unfairness undermines the team.
